Palestinians overwhelm Rafah aid center amid starvation crisis

The Gaza Media Office claims that the Israeli regime is systematically weaponizing starvation, prompting desperate Palestinians to rush the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation center in Rafah. Amid nearly 90 days of deprivation, the chaotic scene unfolded with reports of gunfire and the collapse of the humanitarian corridor.

AhlulBayt News Agency:  According to the Gaza Media Office, the rapid surge of Palestinians advancing toward the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) center in Rafah is attributed to the systematic use of starvation as a weapon by the Israeli regime.

On Tuesday, the Media Office sharply denounced the Israeli regime, claiming that the footage of starving Palestinians overrunning a GHF aid center clearly indicts the regime’s methodical policy of "starvation, siege, and bombing."

Based in Geneva, the GHF is an organization backed by Israeli and US interests, established as an alternative to the traditional UN-affiliated channels for delivering aid to Gaza.

However, the UN and various aid organizations have refused to work with the GHF, arguing that its practices contradict humanitarian principles and seem to "weaponize aid."

The Media Office described a heart-wrenching scene in which thousands of starving civilians—cut off from food and medicine for nearly 90 days—rushed to distribution centers, resulting in these centers being stormed and food being seized amid overwhelming hunger.

In response to the desperate crowd, Israeli forces reportedly opened fire and injured several citizens, a move the Media Office said demonstrates the complete breakdown of the purported humanitarian corridor maintained by the occupation.

Ahmed Abu Taha, one of the people seeking assistance at the center, recalled that crowds stormed the distribution facility, breaking its fences while gunfire echoed and Israeli aircraft loomed overhead. He described the scene as chaotic and panic-stricken.

Israeli media reports indicate that the aid workers affiliated with the GHF, rather than trying to control the escalating disorder or impose any order, opted to evacuate the center.

In a statement, the GHF explained that the massive influx of people forced the evacuation of its staff, and although it maintains its own armed security, they did not open fire on the individuals.

The organization asserted that it began distributing aid the previous day and claimed that by late Tuesday afternoon, it had delivered approximately 8,000 food boxes—equivalent to around 462,000 meals.

Nevertheless, reports from southern Palestine reveal that the GHF operations have ultimately collapsed under the strain of a population enduring three months of starvation.

Since October 7—when what is described as a genocidal campaign against Gaza began—nearly 54,000 Palestinians have been killed and around 119,000 others, mostly women and children, have been injured.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has intensified dramatically since March 18, as the Israeli regime has imposed severe restrictions on the entry of food, fuel, medicine, and water into the territory.

The UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reports that Gaza is currently experiencing a Phase 5 famine, with nearly 71,000 children under the age of five at risk of acute malnutrition.

The IPC defines Phase 5 famine as a situation in which at least one in every five households suffers from an extreme shortage of food, leading to starvation, severe acute malnutrition, and ultimately, death.
